Defense and Security - Satellite observation and surveillance

-

Defence and security applications have come to rely on satellite imagery as a crucial source of information, offering knowledge of the territory, discrete surveillance and frequent passes over any point on Earth.

Planning and conducting
-
Guaranteed accuracy is 16 metres for planimetry and 10 metres for altimetry
-
  • Obtain accurate, uniform, geospatial reference data for joint forces

  • Quickly gain a 3D picture of the terrain

  • Deliver geospatial information to plan and assess operations in the field: threat evaluation, target detection and location, and damage assessment
- -
-

When deploying coalition forces to out-of-area theatres of operation, 3D imagery provides a territory-wide geospatial reference.

Guaranteed horizontal accuracy is 16 metres in mountain areas and vertical accuracy is 10 to 30 metres, depending on slope (20% to 40%).

Operational geospatial information
-
  • Collect imagery needed to derive military geospatial information (satellite image maps, DEM
  • Train future image processing and analysis specialists to:
    • generate 2D and 3D map databases, satellite image maps and DEMs
    • extract data geared specifically to forces and weapon systems (targeting, georeferencing, surface and navigation features)
    • find documentation data and crisis and proliferation indicators (coverage of potential hotspots, surveillance of nations fuelling proliferation and monitoring of disarmament)
  • Produce georeferenced layers of information for command systems
-

Spot Image has helped to set up a number of mapping and geospatial intelligence centres. With all software in place and teams fully trained, the centres are now completely autonomous and providing armed forces with up-to-date maps and intelligence.

During Hurricane Ioke, the U.S. Air Force operated the Eagle Vision mobile receiving station to acquire SPOT and FORMOSAT-2 data in near-real time. It was thus able to assess damage, plan relief operations and evacuate the population.
