24 January 2009, storm-force winds left a trail of destruction through the forests of the Landes region in south-west France. The SPOT 4 and SPOT 5 satellites were tasked by the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters to assess the windstorm’s impact

A SPOT 5 scene acquired on 29 January provided an initial indication of the devastation after the storm south of Arcachon. The satellites are being tasked continually to image the area and will soon be ready to deliver a broad picture of forest damage in the Landes.
