Burn Scar Mapping, a complete satellite-mapping service

-

Burn scar mapping is essential in accurately measuring the impact of burning in forests and so defining and organising rehabilitation projects and preparing for future reforestation campaigns.
The burn scar mapping service uses a complete production process based on proprietary Spot Image technologies.

The geometric and radiometric data contained in the SPOT and FORMOSAT images are firstly corrected using Pixel FactoryTM. The fires’ outlines are then extracted and the vegetation damage caused is analysed by using Overland™ software to perform a historic study of the satellite images, classifying them extremely accurately and detecting areas of change between pre-fire and post-fire images as well as analysing whether the areas are indeed burn scars and not simply areas of felling.
