Tunisian migrants in Lampedusa: SPOT 5 and OceanWay keep track of maritime picture

-

Some 4,000 Tunisian migrants flocked to the island of Lampedusa in makeshift boats between 11 and 13 February following the Tunisian democratic transition.

Faced with this sudden and massive influx, the Italian government declared a humanitarian state of emergency on the island.

Two SPOT 5 images and the OceanWay platform helped keep track of the maritime picture.

SPOT 5 was tasked to track the maritime picture around Lampedusa.

An image acquired on 15 February was compared with a recent archive image from 5 February.

Both images were processed to level 2A and then analysed by the OceanWay platform.

The activity report detailed the location, heading, movements and behaviour of boats in the vicinity.

On 5 February, 18 boats were identified, the smallest of them estimated to be 4 metres long.

On 15 February, less than 4 hours after image acquisition, 6 boats were detected, including 2 military vessels patrolling south of the island.
